From the Podium

Birthday girl

I got a little break this week. I went to Milton, TN to visit a Lakewood Gymnastics and do a balance beam clinic. I flew in and we drove for 5 hours through the first big snow in that area. But I had a great time with the girls. They have their state meet coming up quickly so I wish them the best of luck.

Yesterday I turned 31!! I had a nice dinner with family and my husband got me the cutest shoes and a golf bag. I’m coming up on my third actual golf lesson and every now and then I feel like I am actually improving (knock on wood).

This weekend I get to stay in town and work on a speech I have coming up next week for on healthy lifestyle and girls and women’s health. Tomorrow my husband and I will head to the fairgrounds as celebrity chefs at the 22nd Annual Celebrity Chefs Tasting Luncheon and Silent Auction to help raise money for the Salvation Army.

In the gym world, it was devastating to read that 2004 Olympian and NCAA AA winner, Courtney Kupets, is out for the season. She recently tore her left Achilles tendon on a FX tumbling pass. We’ve seen her comeback from this injury before (2003 Worlds, torn right Achilles and came back to make 2004 Olympic team) so I have no doubt that she will be back and as good as ever for her Senior year at Georgia.

Also, Shawn Johnson took the AA at a recent competition in Italy where the US team also took the team title. And many of the men and women are gearing up for the Pacific Rim competition being held March 27-30 in San Jose, CA.

Happy Birthday! It sounds like you had a good one with your husband and family. One thing I’ve wondered about is whether or not you have any difficulty with work/life balance issues? I find it difficult in my own life to find time for work, grad school, my husband, etc. and I don’t travel nearly as much as you do. I’m curious as to how you manage it and what tips you might be able to provide on work/life balance.
