Rain, rain, go away

Well, the winter is rolling on — I guess we are into spring now — and the weather is still throwing us curveballs! If you talk to any winter enthusiasts these days, it seems that the weather is always the hot topic. It has been wacky, to say the least. I guess the warm weather is a trend that is not going to go away.

I am up in Whistler, British Columbia, this week. A few of us American guys came up to race in the Canadian National Championships that are being held this week. It is an opportunity for more races and also a chance for us to ski on the course that is going to be the venue for the Olympics in 2010.

It is a valuable experience, but we have not gotten as much skiing as we had hoped for. It has been really foggy and rainy, which has kept us from racing at all so far.

We have been skiing a bit, though. Today we ventured to the top of the mountain, hoping that the rain would turn to snow at the higher elevations, but the wind forced the closure of the upper mountain!

There is much more precipitation in the forcast, so we can only hope that it comes in the form of snow! Whistler is such a big and fun mountain to ski that it would be a shame to not be able to enjoy it while we are here.

We are heading up to Alaska next week for the U.S. National Championships in Alyeska. There is a ton of snow up there, so hopefully the weather will start to cooperate. If not, we will keep ourselves occupied.

Yesterday consisted of an intense five-hour Monopoly game complete with a cheering section. Werner Nickerson took the cake on that one, but Scott Macartney got his revenge today by dominating a game of Scrabble that included an international field of competitors!

Last night was also punctuated by Michael Janyk’s birthday bash, which turned into a hilarious debacle with many of the best ski racers in the world running around shirtless in the rain. For the sake of our health, I hope the weather improves! See ya.
