Blogging by the Euro coin

Hi all- Just a quick note from Kitzbuhel. I am on a computer in the lobby of our hotel since there is no wireless around that I could find. Wengen ended up being OK for me but not great. I ended up 25th, which is nothing to write home about, but I was battling an injured back from the second training run. Considering I didn’t ski for the 3 days before the DH and had trouble getting out of bed for the first two days following that training run, I was pretty happy just to make it, so scoring a few points was a nice bonus. I had a couple of mistakes but overall it felt like I hadn’t skied in a while. I was just a little off my game.

Anyway, after one day off I am here in Kitzbühel. We had our first training run today and it was full on. It was bumpy, fast, huge air and dark… in short it was the STREIF as advertised. I talked to one of the guys who helps organize the race now and he said that the head piste boss put in extra bumps along the way to make it extra difficult, as if it needed it. I think that he should have to race it and see how he likes the moguls in the landing zones. Anyway, it should be a fun one to watch and I hear that WCSN is showing it live so be sure to catch it! That is all from me for now… I am out of 20cent euro pieces.

    Scotty-

I saw the crash this morning and am hoping you are ok.

  3. bb Says:

God bless and keep you, Scotty Mac! Your crash was all the more shocking because you had such a beautiful run going. I don’t know if you regained consciousness while they were getting you ready to copter out. If you had, you would have felt the silent respect of that enormous crowd. It was awesome to see.

    Hi Scott,
I don´t know if you remember me, we met 5 years ago at the Londoner in Kitzbühel and had a good time and when I missed the last train you brouhgt me home to Kirchberg. We never met again the last years but I´ve been incredibly pleased to see you becoming more and more successful. So it gave me a nasty shock when I saw your crash this morning. It was a torture to wait an hour until they said on TV that you´re not in a critical condition and I don´t want to know how your family felt in this time. Get well soon Scott, I think of you and hope you´re feeling better soon and you can continue your road to success-when you win the Straif downhill run next year we´ll celebrate at the Londoner!
Big Hug and all the best-Kerstin

    Bonjour Scott !
Hi ! I’m from Geneva in Switzerland. I watch ski on TV since the early 70’s. Well, yesterday, I was in a restaurant with a huge Plasma TV showing the race to their customers. Like the 70′000 fans in Kitz, when you crashed and when the entire planet saw your impressive spasms, before the TV director cut off the camera in respect, we were terrified. Now, after a day of big concern, as we learn that you’re alert, I can tell you, frankly, I thought then (and all the people in the restaurant, and probably in the finish zone in Kitzbuhel) that I just saw a fatal accident. As a matter of fact, my girlfriend and I just had to leave the place without eating… and quite a few others did the same. The afternoon was a bit silent, as we couldn’t erase the images from our head. So, to hear the good news this Sunday afternoon is fantastic, I’m so happy for you and your friends, c’est vraiment une chouette nouvelle ! I hope you won’t get a lot of headaches in the next weeks, but even so, when you’ll watch the footage yourself, you’ll see what I mean :-)
You gain quite a new followers in this adventure (I just registered here to write you) and I’ll watch your blog with interest from now on ! Thanks for being fit enough to survive this, and therefore to allow all ski fans a nice ending to our week-end !! Salut, Karl Reich & Laurence Berthod.

    Hi Scott,
Saw your crash on TV yesterday- pretty spectacular finish - glad to hear you are up and around. Don’t understand why they added extra bumps - the course was already challenging enough back when Alan was there. We wish you all the best for a rapid recovery - and a happy birthday!

    Hi Scott,
I’m realy happy with your fast recovery. Yesterday when I saw your speed 142 km/h I thougt “What speed, my car can’t reach that speed” and in the next moment when I saw your jump and then how you lose control in the air and then the crash I was a bit terrified and I started to scream “Where are the f…ing medics”.That was scary man. I’m glad that you are ok now. I hope you’ll comeback soon.
    P.S. Happy birthday

so my sister called me late the other night freaking out and i’m hoping all is okay with your head. i’m really hoping you’re head is strong and you can be confident enough to rally the steeps again because you are skiing so well and i’m always watching for you and the other boyz in the standings. wish we got world cup weekly over here or something. anyway, thinking about you and hope you make a strong comeback. cheers bro, see you again on the slopes!!!!!!

    Scott,

Great to hear you are doing so well, especially after having to be prepared for the worst regarding your condition. To be alive and well when so many around the world feared you might be dead. We have never met, but as one who has a great appreciation for the courage of downhill racers, I wish you a speedy recovery and a quick return to racing. What a birthday!

  24. Jill Duperey Says:

Sorry for my english, my name is Julie (Jill) and I live in Nice, France. Bonjour Scott ! You have quite a way to celebrate your birthday… wow, it will be hard to top that :-)
Like some wrote above, yep, we too (brother, friends) watched the race live and thought you were …. let’s say… well, an ex-racer (copyright the Monty Python’s) and we turned off the TV. It was among the worst image I ever saw on screen and it was impossible to spend the day without thinking of you. Late in the evening, some good news began to arrive. That’s a real miracle. As Karl said earlier here, not only the crash, but more the convulsions you had, lying without the helmet, were dramatic. Hey, btw it’s Monday here in France and they are currently still playing the full crash on CNN… And of course, now you’re definitely a YouTube.com star !! Anyway, you can’t imagine how happy I am to write this little silly note to you, though reading my english is probably not the best way to calm any headache. Take your time to come back, buy yourself a better helmet, and enjoy the first days of the rest of your life ! Because Saturday was REALLY a birthday, if you want my 2 cents (well, centimes, here in Europe, as you noticed !) A big kiss from me and my friends, excluding my brother who will probably just shake your hand. Bon anniversaire Scott ! Jill.

    Hi Scott,
My family and I watched Hahnenkamm Downhill looking forward to a fascinating race and then we saw your horrible crash on TV. As we are all non paid ambulance man and woman at the Red Cross we feared the most dreadful.
On Sunday morning we were glad to hear that you woke up from the coma. And today I read that first of all you wanted to know your race time when you woke up.
Those are wonderful news. I’d like to wish you a belated happy birthday and hope you will be back soon. Get well soon!!!!
    Best wishes Babs and family

  28. rach1978 Says:

    Hi Scott,
This crash has a least been good for the fan base, just managed very technical job of registering, to leave nice get well message, and promise to be proper groupie like fan in future. Love watching the skiing and was shiving off study (medical finals this week) to watch downhill on sunday morning. Just tucking into cornflakes when I saw your awful crash, watched the rest of ski sunday which is generally quite boring, and not a mention of how you were. Tried on line and realised as usual in Ireland we never get to watch anything live and it had happened day before on your 30th birthday no less, now that really was unlikely. Really glad your going to be ok, I am sure anyone who saw it said a little prayer for you.

Wishing you the speediest of recoveries rachael

    Hi Scott,

great to hear you are feeling better and better. I was at the downhill race in Kitz and saw your crash. It was horrible to see. I wish you a speedy recovery and hope you are soon ready to get back to racing.

    All the best, verena

    Hi Scott,

I work here in Zurich, and on Monday at work, the one and only subject was your crash. It seems that we were all thinking the same when we saw it, and it wasn’t a nice thought. The human body is quite incredible, you were like a dismenteled puppet, how you were able to get out of this, not only alive but in one piece, is quite amazing. Can’t tell you how relieved we were on Sunday, and from me and all my friends in our staff, we wish you all the best for you and a great birthday, hope the cake will still be good in a few days !!

    Hi Scott,

Great to hear you’re recovering “better than expected” (from Wikipedia). It was quite shocking to watch. I wonder if they’re getting any heat from the extra bumps they added to the Streif.

Hope to watch you skiing again next year.

    Cheers!
