From the Pool

The Grinch Kick

Pre-Christmas Christmas training is over for me. The pool is closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I finished up with seven practices in a row. It consisted of three straight doubles and one morning on the end. I have been so tired lately. There was one night that I tried to watch a movie on the couch and passed out before 8 o’clock. That was despite the constant aching in my shoulders and pretty much the rest of my body.

There is a Christmas tradition with the Athens Bulldogs Swim Club. Every year right before the team gets off for Christmas, they do the Grinch kick. Harvey puts How the Grinch Stole Christmas on the scoreboard at the pool and the team gets to kick as fast or slow as they please for the entirety of the cartoon. So we got to kick easy for about the last half-hour of practice. Harv made the first hour and a half hard enough to make up for a little easy kicking though. I am the only college age or older swimmer left in town, so I kicked easy with Pirie Humphries and Stephanie Junker, two ABSC swimmers. I think that we totaled around 3 hundred meters in the whole half-hour. It was my first Grinch kick and I made it count. Now I will recuperate and get ready for Christmas training part deux.
