Cold
We are having a cold snap right now. The lows have been in the teens and highs in the 40s. I can deal with the temperature outside. All I have to do is put layers on. The problem is that I can’t put on anything to keep warm at practice. This morning we walked out onto the pool deck and it was freezing. I’m not really a fan of waking up and getting out of my nice warm bed, then walking onto a pool deck that is no more than 60 degrees with the air circulating so much that it is breezy. Then we found out that the pool was only 75 degrees.
We sat on the deck freezing while the coaches decided what we were doing for the morning so we wouldn’t freeze. We wound up splitting up the men’s team between the two open lanes of the diving well and our rec pool. Both of those pools were around 84 degrees. Basically we weren’t going to be comfortable no matter what this morning. The good thing was that the coaches had some sympathy this morning and didn’t work us too hard or for too long in the hot water.
This afternoon was a different story. It was only distance group that had practice and we had some hard work to do. So we sucked it up and got in the cold pool and just started going fast right through warm up. It took me until about halfway through our main set of 8 x 400s to get warm. It was a pretty good set though because I didn’t wind up overheating and had probably a little more endurance that I would have if the water were even normal temperature. Another benefit of the coldness is that we got our 9 grand done in less than two hours because no one wanted to sit on the wall for long. Still, here’s hoping the pool and air in the building will be back to normal tomorrow.
