Quest for the perfect sunscreen
It’s been pretty sunny out here at Stanford for the past month and I have now gotten pretty darkly tanned. I’ve always been the type who gets easily tanned and never used to worry about it. Now it makes me a little nervous, thinking about how much sun I am getting while practicing outdoors every day for several hours. When I was younger and in college, I didn’t think that it was important to wear sunscreen. However, now that I am older and can see the effects of that past carelessness on my skin I’ve really been trying to protect my skin from further sun damage.
To further that goal I’ve begun a quest to find some good sunscreen to wear during practice. I haven’t really come up with anything yet but I live in hope. I think that the main problem is that I run into the locker room all sweaty from dryland practice with about five minutes to change into my suit and so the sunscreen doesn’t stick, doesn’t dry, and then just comes off in the pool. Yesterday I tried the spray on kind. It’s quicker, which is a plus, but I’m not sure that it worked very well. The day before that I put on water resistant SPF 70 but I still came out of the pool looking like a reverse raccoon (just think about it –- you don’t tan through your goggles). I’m afraid that I might have to resort to the white-faced zinc look. I’ll keep you updated.
