Leaving Canada

Right now, I think that I am somewhere west of British Columbia, Canada. I can see the shoreline and kind of pick out individual trees but would give myself a low chance of survival if I had to swim to shore (and then, I’d still have to make it to civilization, which Man vs. Wild has taught me is possible, but challenging).

Yesterday, we did the lifeboat drill. It was kind of intense since there were over 100 people at each boat, and we had to take attendance for everyone. I hope that we don’t have to use the boats, but they assured us that they have food and water for several days and would float filled with water, overloaded and turned upside down. I really hope that we don’t have to test out those features in particular.

This morning, I woke up to some significant seasickness and ear/jaw pain. The combo was pretty unpleasant. But I took some Dramamine and Advil with breakfast (I’ve been careful to limit my Advil intake since I think that I did some damage to my stomach taking so much in Japan) and have started to feel a lot better. I laughed at myself because even though I was feeling pretty nauseated, it didn’t stop me from picking out a full breakfast. Ah, the swimmer food mentality.

We’ve passed out of the protection of Vancouver Island and now only have open ocean to the port side of the boat, which is why I think that I have started to notice the wave action. Soon, I think it will be better because we will head into the inside passage of Alaska and have calmer waters. I have to admit that I am a huge baby when it comes to seasickness. One time, Greg and I were kayaking near San Diego and I had to get out of the kayak and have him tow it in while I swam the mile into shore because I just couldn’t handle being in the boat any longer. At that point, I didn’t even care about all the little sharks that our guide had shown us in the water on our way out.

I’m amazed you swam with sharks. You must have felt pretty bad. I would have been hearing DUMdumDUMdumDUMdum the entire time.
