From the Pool

Hair today, gone tomorrow

My big self-debate recently is whether I should cut my hair or not. I’m not talking about a simple trim here. I’m talking about the serious, chop off most of your hair, type of cut.

Right now, it is super long and pretty. But there are two drawbacks to super long hair. One, I can’t keep it from getting tangled. And two, it creates this huge speed bump on the back of my head when I am wearing my swim cap. I’ve had a lot of coaches try to convince me to cut it off. Richard actually succeeded in getting me to chop it last Olympic year. And if you will remember, I made the team by a few hundredths. So it was definitely worth it.

Last time, I did it in stages. But this time, if I am going to end up with short hair anyway, I might as well cut off enough all at once to donate it to charity. That means at least 10 inches. Which is a lot. That is almost a whole foot of hair, or about two years of growing your hair out. Cutting off that much will leave me with chin-length hair, which I am not so sure about. And what happens if it is like the whole Samson thing?

That kind of talk makes me think twice about this. It looks so nice right now. I will probably look awful afterwards. Good thing Greg and I decided to put off the wedding for a while. I will probably need a while for my head to recover. But then again, I don’t want him to have second thoughts …

I had a similar debate this summer and I opted to cut it because I figured it would grow back . . . even though it seems like it won’t. It also made it a lot easier to manage my hair with swimming and in general. You can always go for a fun, asymmetrical cut if you think the straight, short bob is not exciting. There are lots of options to make it fun and having a new look is always exciting!

You will look different, but not bad, with short hair. It will be cute!

Just do it. Cut it all off. FREEDOM.
