Nothing without my new gadgets
Last weekend was Super Bowl weekend, which Greg and I spent with Lacey and Andrew and a few other friends.
First we celebrated Andrew’s acceptance to Stanford GSB and the fact that they are now not going to move away from us by having dinner at The House of Prime Rib in San Francisco. Then Andrew and Lacey beat us at Pictionary…but not before Greg and I destroyed them at Taboo!
Greg and I were not on our “A” game though. It was clear even in Taboo that we were not able to achieve our normal speedy understanding of each other’s thoughts. That’s the kind of thing that usually leads to a fight for us but fortunately Greg still was on his “A” game in argument prevention. I personally cannot take any of the credit for keeping us out of a fight but that’s rare for me anyway.
On Sunday, Andrew and Lacey hosted a Super Bowl party at their house. Everyone was pretty much rooting for the Giants so we were all jumping up and down and cheering at the end when they won. It felt a lot like the Stanford vs. USC game this year. And it was just a really entertaining game the whole way through. The Super Bowl can be really boring if the matchup between the teams is bad. But this one was great!
Unfortunately, I got back home to discover one of the most frustrating problems of modern day technology – bad internet. For some reason, I cannot connect to the internet in my apartment with any of the computers that I have here. I walk around muttering to myself “connection timeout – what does that mean!?!?!?”
While it has only gone on for a little while, I pretty much feel like it is the end of the world. I can’t check my email, I can’t randomly go online to check out the cool new Xbox game I saw on TV, I can’t even go to an internet provider’s website to check out what options I have for different internet. More disastrous, I can’t even send in my blog! (Notice the growing length of this one)
It has made me realize how dependent I have gotten on my little gadgets and technologies. I’m old enough to remember when getting an email was totally novel and unique, when most people didn’t have a cell phone, and when CDs were the new thing in music. Now, I hardly go anywhere without my phone (even if I don’t ever answer it), I have three iPods (in my defense I didn’t buy myself any of them), and I can’t go a day without internet (I’m upset at myself that I didn’t get myself an iPhone).
Let’s hope that my current technology crisis doesn’t go on too long. As it is, I am going to have to save this blog onto one of those mini drives, give it to one of my teammates, and them have them hack into my email so that we can find the correct addresses to send this too! Grr.
In other news…last week I was selected for random, out of competition drug tests three different times. Intense!
