On the Run

We’re here!

Walter Davis and Bershawn Jackson
Lauryn Williams and her assistant

Well, I have finally arrived!!!!

I am so sorry I haven’t been keeping you all up to date. I have so many things I want to share about last week before I actually departed for Japan, but I just couldn’t find my way to the computer. I will cover the events of my recent travels and hopefully — with way too much time on my hands while over here — get to reflect on my week later.

So I departed Miami on Monday evening for Detroit to visit with family before departing on Tuesday at 3:40 p.m. I was so excited to get to the gate and see about 20 other athletes that were flying with me. I am not generally an emotional person, but I loved the feeling I got when I saw them and couldn’t help but yell “We’re on our way to WORLDS!!!!” Everyone laughed at me, but I brushed them off and told them they had better get exicted because it is game time!!!

There was a slight delay because Lashante Moore’s connecting flight was late, but we waited for her. Yep, no memeber of Team USA shall be left behind. She is not running the 100, so I had no problem waiting on her. :-) I have a very hard time with jet lag and considering it was 4 a.m. Japan time when we departed, I thought I should try to sleep first and stay up the latter part of the flight in an effort to start the adjustment, and that is just what I did. I am usually a reader, but this flight I chose movies instead. Couldn’t tell you the name of any of the three — isn’t that a shame. LOL!!

Fourteen hours later, we arrived. The fact that everyone got their bags meant we were off to a great start! We got outside and were met by the USATF staff, which greeted us warmly, along with a group of Japanese children who had gifts for us. They were going coo-coo for Tyson Gay, and he was loving the attention. Our bags were put on a separate vehicle and would be taken straight to our rooms at the hotel, so all we had to do was get on the bus.

I have enclosed a picture of Walter Davis and Bershawn Jackson on the bus. There was an abundance of hotel staff present directing us, our room keys were ready and so was dinner. I believe we are going to be very impressed with the organization and hospitality of the Japanese people.

I managed to stay up until 12:30 a.m. and sleep until 7:15, so I was proud of myself. But around 11 a.m., I felt as if I had been hit by a bus. I only took a 45-minute nap, then forced myself out and about to explore. Wallace Spearmon and I went to the outlet mall. He can never come back with empty hands, so six pairs of Nikes later we returned to the hotel, had lunch and got ready for practice.

Once again, there was an enormous staff to greet us at the track and attend to our every need. They even had on USATF training camp shirts, which I thought was cool because training camp to us is no big deal, but it made it all seem very official. Today was just a short set of relay drills, then everyone went off to do their own thing. I had a grass workout, and the girl you see pictured with me ushered me around and opened doors and watched me like a hawk, as if she was my very own personal assisant. I could definitely get used to this kind of pampering.

In the weight room (which was immaculate, I must tell you), I didnt even have to change the weights; there was someone to help me with that!!!! If only I could figure out how to get them to do the workout for me, I would be all set. :-)

As I type, it is 11:38 p.m. I am trying to make it until 12:30 again, and hopefully I will have set up a sleep pattern. I am excited to be here and really looking forward to the days to come. I will keep you all updated!
